(Registration number:  1521/01 of 27/10/2005)

ABOUT THE GRFPA

Uniting landowners in the common purpose of preventing wildfires

The GRFPA was registered in 2005 in terms of the National Veld and Forest Fire Act 101 of 1998 (NVFFA)  by the then department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF)

The legislation promotes the formation of Fire Protection Associations in areas that have a history and risk of veldfires and provides the legal framework for the registration of FPA’s,and sets out the responsibilities of the associations, its members, and all landowners in respect of prevention, preparedness and suppression of wildfires.

EMERGENCY NUMBERS

AREA OF JURISDICTION

The GRFPA boundaries correspond with the municipal boundaries of the Rustenburg Local Municipality.  The area is approximately 3 423km2 or 342325 Ha.  Also included, by way of the constitution, are parent farms Elandskraal and Buffelshoek in the Mooinooi area, and Pilanesberg National Park.

Within the GRFPA there are “Clusters” based on geographical proximity, each with a Cluster Manager, elected by the members in that area.

WHO IS YOUR CLUSTER MANAGER?

WHAT WE DO

  • Provide a platform for rural owners and managers of land to co-operate in the prevention of veldfires
  • Provide information to members, and the wider public, through WhatsApp, Face Book, our website, and local newspapers about:
    – their duties and responsibilities under the Act
    – developments in firefighting technology and equipment
    – importance of, and methodology in creating firebreaks
  • Provide limited shared resources for use by members
  • The cluster managers encourage and coordinate mutual assistance in their areas

THE GRFPA IS NOT A FIREFIGHTING SERVICE

Fire suppression operations are conducted according to the Fire Brigade Services Act and remain the responsibility of the Rustenburg Local Municipality.

There are members of the GRFPA who voluntarily respond to the cry for help in the event of a fire. They do so as a community service in their own time, at their own risk and cost.
